Planet Mars is known since the ancient times for its red color. This was the main reason why ancient Greeks and Romans have seen it as a planet of war. At first it was named after the Greek god of war Ares, but later on its name was changed by the Romans to their counterpart Mars. The color of the planet is caused by the composition of its surface, for it is covered in rust. Mars is most likely the planet humans would inhabit if they had to leave the Earth.
There is a difference in approaches to Mars when it comes to mythology. While the Greek god Ares was linked to a destructive force that disrupts peace, Roman god Mars was in charge of securing peace and was considered a father to Roman people. This is a good base to lead us to understanding of the astrological approach to planet Mars – it can be destructive and angry on one hand, but protective and brave on the other.
Mars is in charge of our connection to planet Earth, of our boundaries and the ability to protect ourselves. It represents our first chakra responsible for the energy our entire body is getting, that is in proportion with the quality of our grounding. Its positive role in our chart is to give us the energy to live our life in the now and materialize all ideas in our reality. Every negative side of Mars is a consequence of blockage in this energy center, for our animal nature is not well incorporated in the world we live in. If someone’s Mars is out of balance, they are easily distracted by emotions or excessive mental activity, and have difficulty reaching goals due to the lack of ability to merge their emotional or mental reality with the physical one.
The basic problem with the root chakra and Mars is fear. Bravery is the only tool we have to use to make things in real world work. This is applied to a many number of things, big and small. We need bravery to use the new coffee machine, as much as we need it to publicly perform or inhabit the rocket on its way to leave the Earth’s atmosphere. If we want to improve the quality of our actions and find out why we lack initiative, we should search for answers in the dignity and difficult aspects of our natal position of Mars.
Mars normally doesn’t feel good in signs ruled by Venus (Taurus and Libra) and the Moon (Cancer), rulers of feminine, passive and emotional. If a person has it located here, they need to learn to be rational focused on their goal, although different circumstances might tempt them to go astray.
What feeds our Mars is discipline, earnestness and to simplify – the ability to stick with our decisions. This is why Mars feels so good when in Capricorn, Aries and Scorpio, signs with “lack of emotion”.
Take a moment and think about it. If you are afraid and angry, if you have no control over your actions and your emotions, there must be something your Mars wants you to learn. Focus, be brave, put some red shoes on and imagine your connection to the core of planet Earth. Remember what’s real and what you need to do to make yourself happy. No one else can do this for you.
